Don’t even get me started on how hard it is to resist these little buggers. It’s one of those treats where it’s just better to not even make eye contact with. Growing up in my home, this dessert was always called ‘Puppy Chow’. I know there is a long standing argument about whether it’s Puppy Chow or Muddy Buddies. Heck, I have even heard Monkey Munch, Reindeer Food and probably a few other unique and clever names. I’m sure this debate will continue long after I’m gone. In our home, it’s Puppy Chow, it’s here to stay, and it’s the best!

You’re probably thinking, why waste a blog post on how to make Puppy Chow. Everyone knows how to make it. It’s virtually a no-brainer! Here’s the thing, though. Most people don’t make it right. There are a few different reasons, but it pretty much boils down to the last step.

I don’t know that I have ever came across a Puppy Chow recipe that included both, Rice Chex and Crispix cereal. Generally Puppy Chow is made solely with Rice Chex. My recipe incorporates both. This creates a little more interest to the powdered-covered, cereal bits. Crispix is shaped like a hexagon, where as Rice Chex, are square. The density is also a little different. Crispix are more dense in texture, than rice chex. Again, making this recipe more interesting to not only the eye, but the palate, as well.

Another mistake made when making Puppy Chow is the ratio. Can you ever have too many chocolate chips? Or how about peanut butter? Let’s face it, most of us could eat spoonfuls of peanut butter straight from the jar (and probably have) while watching reruns of ‘Sex and The City’!  My recipe calls for more than the average. Yes, this makes it more fattening. But if you’re going there, you’re going there. You with me?

Next, we have the powdered sugar. Frankly, I don’t even measure this. It’s important to have a 2 pound bag. You won’t use it all, but believe me, you won’t be making frosting any time soon with the small amount of leftovers. The powdered sugar step is a matter of pouring, shaking, and pouring again, until the cereal mix is completely white! You’ll definitely have extra powdered sugar at the bottom of your bag, but that’s nothing to complain about.

Follow this recipe and tips I’ve offered, and you’ve just made the best puppy chow ever! You all know what it tastes like. It’s sweet, peanut buttery, extra chocolatey, and slightly crunchy. You’re not going to be able to stay away. It’s love at first bite, it really is! My favorite time to munch on these little critters, is right after they are made, because the chocolate is still warm. An AMAZING treat - loved by both, young + old ... impossible to stay away from!

Ingredients
  • 16oz. chocolate chips
  • 1-1/4 cup peanut butter
  • 1 stick + 2 T. Butter
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 box Crispix cereal
  • ½ box Rice Chex cereal
  • 4½ cups powdered sugar
Instructions
  1. Double up two large, brown paper grocery bags, and pour both types of cereal in bag
  2. On low heat, melt chocolate chips, peanut butter, margarine and vanilla in medium-size pot
  3. Once melted, pour chocolate sauce on cereal, tightly roll bag and shake well
  4. Add powdered sugar and shake well again. add more until completely covered in snow white
